Jay Hottinger serves in the Ohio Senate and represents the people of the 31st District, which includes all of Licking, Perry, Coshocton, and Tuscarawas Counties and part of Holmes County. Prior to running for the Senate in 2014, Jay served as state representative for the 71st House District in Licking County. He also served two terms as a member of the Newark City Council, where he was president pro tempore.
In addition to his public service, Jay is also vice president of sales for Truck One, Inc., a Newark-based trucking company.
It is that business experience and understanding of his community that Jay brings with him to the statehouse, where he has worked tirelessly on issues important to his constituents. He has voted to reduce or eliminate billions of dollars of taxes and has advocated for other policies that grow business and help Ohioans compete in the workforce.
Jay has been a leader at the statehouse, serving previously as assistant president pro tempore and assistant majority whip. His work on the powerful Controlling Board oversaw the state’s handling of people’s tax dollars and helped fund job creation efforts. Most recently, he was chairman of the Ohio House Insurance Committee.
In 2012 he received the “Defender of Liberty Award”¿ from The American Conservative Union, the Ohio Sportsman’s Legislator of the Year Award, and the Ohio Conservation Legislator of the Year Award.
Jay is a lifelong resident of Newark. He is a 1988 graduate of Newark High School and a 1992 graduate of Capital University, where he graduated summa cum laude in political science and public administration. He and his wife, Cheri, reside in Newark and are the proud parents of three daughters: Savannah, Heather, and Jayme. The Hottingers are active members of the Heath Church of Christ.
